Christmas Wreath Ideas - From Classic to Creative Festive Styles

Christmas Wreath Ideas - From Classic to Creative Festive Styles

We love Christmas wreaths. In our humble opinion, Christmas wreaths are second on only to Christmas trees when it comes to essential festive decorations. A wreath is an announcement to the outside world that this is a household fully embracing the spirit of Christmas - beyond the wreath is a home full of warmth and Christmas cheer.

There's more to it than that though, and Christmas wreaths will mean different things to different people, whether that is religious symbolism, a good luck charm, a traditional decoration or just because they look great. Combined with the right Christmas garland and other Christmas decor, you can create an incredible festive display.

Another reason we love Christmas wreaths is the fact that there is so much scope for being creative - there are so many new and exciting Christmas wreath ideas, on top of the traditional ones, that mean that you can pick out the perfect one for you home. We want to explore some of those options in this blog, to help you decide which wreath you would like to adorn your front door this year.

Traditional Christmas Wreath Ideas

So much of what we do at this time of year is wrapped up in tradition, so it makes sense to start with the classic look of Christmas wreaths to kick us off - the most popular types of Christmas wreaths.

There are a few elements that make up a traditional wreath - any combination of the following will usually be found on a classic wreath:

  • Lush green foliage: This is usually the leaves and branches of a green hedges or bushes in the UK, like holly, spruce and the laurel are the most popular for a traditional wreath. Holly has the advantage of being quite waxy and shiny, while the longer branches of the laurel and spruce mean that you can create more consistent shapes. A combination of the three works brilliantly.

  • Red berries: Again we'll look to the holly bush here - holly berries are a beautiful bright red which contrast with the greenery perfectly. They'll last for around five weeks after you've harvested them, so throughout the festive season.

  • Pinecones: pinecones help to add to the natural accents of the wreath, bringing a lovely brown, woody feel to the piece as a whole. The delightful pine scent is an extra little bonus.

  • Ribbon: You can add a little flourish to a traditional wreath with a nice red ribbon. Bows help to make it a little more colourful, while still keeping in with the traditional feel of your wreath.

As the most popular type of Christmas wreaths, these are the most readily available - you'll find a huge range of artificial Christmas wreaths that conform to this kind of look, as well as plenty natural handmade versions. It will also be easy to find garlands that fit on with this kind of look, if you are planning a larger display.

Rustic Christmas Wreath Ideas

If you're looking to make your own Christmas wreath, then a more rustic style could be the perfect choice. You'll be able to fine a lot of the elements in a rustic wreath either in your garden or just while you're out and about on a walk.

There are a lot of similarities between a rustic and the traditional wreaths, but this type will look a little less polished, and a little more natural. It will rely more on foliage and greenery, without the extras like ribbons, baubles or lights. Here are the main elements:

  • Twigs & branches: While there is plenty of room for the greenery that could get used in the traditional wreaths, you'll usually find that there are more twigs and branches used in a rustic wreath. Fir branches are a great options, providing the best of both worlds, but some people just use twigs as the base of the wreath, which brings its own distinct beauty. Willow is a great material to use, as it can bend and twist easily, without breaking.

  • Dried flowers: These are great to add a bit of natural colour to your wreath. Flowers like lavender, eucalyptus, heather and rabbit tail all make great dried flowers to add a bit more texture to your display, and can be easily intertwined with your wreath base.

  • Pinecones: As with traditional wreaths, pine cones often fined their way to rustic wreaths. The woody aesthetic is enhanced, and some people make wreaths entirely out of pinecones.

  • Dried fruit: Citrus fruit can be dehydrated and added to a wreath. They bring a wonderful aroma with them, on tops of subtle changes in colour that work brilliantly against the brown and green of the base.

You don't tend many artificial wreaths that look more rustic, and you are probably missing a trick if you don't get a handmade version - the key thing here is that they look natural.

Modern Christmas Wreath Ideas

If you are looking for more modern Christmas door wreath ideas, then there are plenty out there. When you think about it, anything that you can form into a circle and hang on your door could become a wreath, so from there, it all comes down to your imagination. Here are some suggestions:

  • Bauble wreaths: If you love Christmas baubles, then why not make an entire wreath out of them? You can combine different colours and shapes to form a stunning centrepiece for your front door.

  • Paper stars: Fancy yourself as an origami expert? make a series of paper stars, and join them all together in a circle. Not ideal for an outdoor wreath that might suffer in the rain, but use this to decorate inside your home, and use a range of different colours that fit in with your other Christmas decorations.

  • Spray painted wreath: You could combine all three types of wreath - create a classic and rustic wreath above, and then spray paint it, maybe gold or silver, to create a show-stopping wreath. You could also use a glitter or snow spray, or maybe a metallic red or green colour.

Almost anything can be incorporated into a wreath with a little planning. Lights, ornaments, tinsel, baubles - create your very own modern Christmas wreath.
